Témoin/Witness is an exhibition initiated by the Goethe-Institut South Africa and curator Simon Njami; co-curated by Sammy Baloji andMonique Pelser. It showcases the works by Sammy Baloji(DRC), Calvin Dondo(Zimbabwe), Sabelo Mlangeni(South Africa), Abraham Oghobase (Nigeria), Monique Pelser (South Africa) andMichael Tsegaye (Ethiopia).
The exhibition talks about the social issues, the ever-changing past and present, and the inherited cultures across the African continent. It represents how this group of emerging photographers perform the role of the onlooker and actively survey their immediate environments. The works then become historical records and evidence reflecting the constantly shifting history, inherited cultures and social issues that span the African continent.
To bring the exhibition to an appropriate end, we have organised something special: Kenyan photographer Mimi Cherono Ng’ok who participated in the last Photographer’s Portfolio Meeting will give us an insight on the programme and the experience she had. Additionally, she has been chosen to co-curate the next exhibition emerged from the Portfolio Meeting together with the South African photographers Thabiso Sekgala and Musa Nxumalo that will open at the Joburg Art Fair 2014. The evening will be rounded up with some nice and chilling Dub tunes by DJ Sheel.
