The Goethe-Institut Kenya, the Kenya Library Association (KLA) and the Jomo Kenyatta Foundation (JKF) are presenting the fifth edition of “Maktaba Awards” (Library of the Year Award) in Kenya in September 2014.
This award aims to recognize and reward the best performing libraries in Kenya in areas such as currency and relevance of their collection, integration of modern ICT in their services as well as effective customer service. Through this project, we hope to encourage Kenyan libraries and information centres to improve the quality of the provision of library and information services as well as to promote a culture of reading among Kenyans. This is because access to information is a key catalyst in the realization of Kenya’s Vision 2030.
Participating libraries are assessed in the following areas, among others:
• Currency, diversity and relevance of the library collection
• Integration of modern technologies in service provision
• Innovation and creativity in service provision
• Promotion of local content and indigenous knowledge
• Relevance of the services provided to the local community
• Sustainability of the services and programmes
The Maktaba Awards Gala shall be held on Friday 19th September 2014 at the Louis Leakey Auditorium. A total of 77 libraries in Kenya participated this year.
